Chemical Peels are specially prepared solutions that are professionally applied to the skin which causes the skin to shed its outermost layers. Age and acne spots, irregular pigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles are some of the conditions that appear on the outer layers of the skin. The chemical peel solution evenly attacks the outermost layer of skin once applied, allowing for the accelerated growth of new skin that is smoother and clearer. There are varying intensities that are regulated and used at medical spas and dermatology centers. Our medical spa offers a range of superficial, medium, and some deeper chemical peels. Chemical peels can provide truly drastic results that are non-invasive, unlike some of the cosmetic procedures performed by a plastic surgeon.
Chemical Peel’s Drastic Results
The dramatic changes in the skin’s texture and appearance after a chemical peel are due to the nature of the process. The chemical solution evenly addresses the entire face, causing the skin to peel over the course of 1-14 days. By removing an entire thin layer of tissue, multiple layers of damage are simply removed from the face. Acne marks, age spots, freckles are lifted off the skin during the peel. As the tighter, new layer of skin forms, wrinkles and fine lines are also reduced.
Chemical Peel Process
During a pre-service consultation, a licensed aesthetician will carefully examine the skin and will test the chemical solution on a patch of skin. This process is to check for adverse reactions. After this is complete, the aesthetician will clean the skin. The chemical peel solution is then applied to the face using special cosmetic brushes. For the any peel other than a superficial peel, some type of numbing cream may be applied to the skin to reduce stinging and burning sensations. The solution will stay on the face for several minutes as the reaction takes place on the skin. Next, the solution will be removed, or neutralized, by water or alcohol.
Chemical Peel Recovery
Each type of chemical peel has a different recovery time, dependent upon the strength of the peel and the sensitivity of a patient’s skin. The most important thing to do post treatment is to keep out of the sun. Hats and strong sunblock need to be worn for days after light peels, and for weeks after stronger peels. The skin will peel off on its own, and care should be taken not to pull pieces off. This can cause scaring and uneven pigmentation. During recovery, certain skin products may not be used.
